I have been on both sides of the spectrum when it comes to staying active. I have been the die-hard, workout everyday kind of person, and I have also been the workout-as-you-can guy. However, I always felt refreshed when I was engaged in the daily workout routine.
I am sure you’ll agree with me that following an exercise routine is much easier. However, it can become challenging when you have other priorities, such as a family, career, etc. The fact is that you can’t escape the reality that you have to keep active if you want to stay healthy.
Traditional calisthenics has been a good alternative during the pandemic, especially when the gym is not an option. I remember my days in boot camp and the strenuous physical readiness we did daily. There are so many more home gyms and gadgets to help us stay in shape out there. So it is important to understand that you do not need to go to a gym or run on a track to have a good workout. The notion that working out involves going to the gym has been programmed in our minds by the media. The all-or-nothing mentality should have no place in our daily lives because our health and movement are subjective to our awareness and willingness to stay healthy.
Think back to when you were a small child and the many fun activities you used to play: Tag, football, dodgeball, and such. Think of the swing set at the park or the on the playground. Think back to your childhood when you played in a carefree manner, fearless about whether you were doing it right or wrong. Any physical activity that you can turn into exercise is worth the time when you were a child.
One day, after noticing a beautiful park on my way home from dropping the kids off at school, I wondered wether, I could walk a couple of laps around the park. And now with the kids at home due to the COVID variant, the mere practice of running or walking safely around the neighborhood has become an alternative.
You may think that exercising at home is not be as glamorous as going to the gym, and you may be right. But it keeps the mind occupied, the body in motion. It serves multiple purposes. It exposes me to fresh air and allows me to expand my lungs. It keeps my legs and knees in motion and helps me refine my posture. It feels like a meditative routine.
